Leica R4
The Leitz R4 is a 35mm single-lens reflex camera introduced in 1980, using the Leica R bayonet mount. It positioned Leitz's reflex line as a multi-mode electronic SLR, offering aperture-priority, shutter-priority, programmed and manual exposure modes alongside selective and integrated metering.
At UK auction today the R4 body is an accessible Leica R entry point: hammer prices over the past two years have ranged from about £56 to £260, with a median of roughly £100–£110 for working examples. Because these are saleroom hammer results rather than dealer retail, what a clean R4 is worth at auction sits well below shop pricing, and condition together with the presence of a working lens drives most of the variation in what each example sells for.

As is detailed in an attached letter from Hilmar Pabel's wife, the camera was only used once, in 1991 during a visit to King Hussein in Jordan. The king, photographed by Pabel since his coronation, heartly greeted him in the Amman stadium (original photograph of this scene attached). Thereafter he was invited to accompany the king to his palace and to make family pictures on condition that the film remained with the king and that none of the photographs would be published. Of course Hilmar Pabel was happy to fulfil the monarch's wishes and according to the kings status used the golden R4 during this audience.
