Leica M2
The Leitz M2 is a 35mm rangefinder camera using the Leica M bayonet mount, introduced in the late 1950s. It sat below the M3 in Leitz's line-up at launch, offering 35/50/90mm viewfinder framelines aimed at photographers working with a wider standard lens than the M3's 50mm base.
Across 20 UK auction results recorded between 2022 and late 2025, hammer prices for the M2 body range from £550 to around £2,100, with a median near £825. The word 'KRIEGSSCHATZ' engraved on the back of the top plate is a keystone of numerous exhibitions and works of art of Sarkis. The camera comes with a brass-mount Summicron 2/50mm no.1474808. Included in this lot are a signed copy of the sought-after artbook 'Blackout Leica Museum' (Berlin, 1976, near-mint condition) and a letter of provenance. Sarkis Zabunyan (* 1938) Sarkis Zabunyan, known by his first name SARKIS, is a French artist of Armenian origin. His fascination for art began when, as a teenager, he saw an illustration of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" in the newspaper. In 1964 he emigrated to Paris with his wife and set up a studio in the Paris suburb of Villejuif. Much of his work has since been exhibited internationally, and in 1980 he was appointed to the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. Leica cameras were used also internally in various departments, where cameras were needed, and there was a well-organised camera lending service for temporary private use, as a courtesy to those members of the company, who couldn’t or didn’t want to afford a Leica camera. After the war, the term “Betriebskamera” was used, beginning with Leica model IIIc. Not only in total sales, but also for internal use, the number of Leica M2 cameras was much less than of the M3 in proportion.
