Sales History
Prices shown are realised prices — auction results and completed eBay sales, never asking prices. Most saleroom figures are hammer prices, before commission; some houses publish a premium-inclusive figure, and we do not adjust for condition. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher. Auction: Fine Photographica (Lot 419) Title: A Ross Photoscope Binocular Camera
Description:
1889, black, serial no. 8243, with Ross f/8 lens, body, VG, shutter working, lenses, VG, some light cleaning marks, complete with a spare film magazine and attachements to convert into a conventional pair of binoculars About the Photoscope: The device is constructed in the form of field glasses, featuring a removable objective lens and a roll-film holder capable of capturing twenty-four images measuring 3.5 × 4 cm within one tube. The other tube contains a viewing lens, ground glass screen, and magnifier. Each component is interchangeable with standard binocular eyepieces and objectives. The objective and viewing lenses, along with an inter-lens shutter, replace the standard eyepiece unit and integrate with the focusing tubes. As a result, the camera must be focused and operated with the eyepiece end facing the subject. The shutter is tensioned using a wheel and activated by a lever positioned between the two tubes. This camera is based on patents Nos. 8378 (1889) and 2725 (1891), filed by William Sanders, and was produced by Ross from 1892. The present example features a shutter mechanism that represents an improvement over the two designs illustrated in the original patents, which may not have been manufactured in practice. Ross advertised the camera as an attachment compatible with any of their binoculars, priced between £4 10s and £6, with an additional charge of 5s for fitting to binoculars by other makers. A complete Ross cased outfit was offered at 12 guineas (£12 12s).
