Leica Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH
The Leica Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH is a wide-angle prime for the Leica M rangefinder bayonet mount, introduced in 1997 and still catalogued at the time of Laney's second edition. It uses 9 elements in 7 groups with a single aspherical surface, three highly refractive elements and two of partial anomalous dispersion, and was built as a more compact replacement for the earlier non-aspherical Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8. Because the M viewfinder does not cover 21mm, Leica listed a dedicated bright-line finder, catalogue number 12008, alongside it.
No UK auction records are attached to this page, so no hammer price, median or value range can be quoted here without inventing figures. As of 2026 the sensible approach is to judge what a copy is worth against saleroom results for comparable late M-mount wide-angles as they appear, remembering that UK auction results are wholesale hammer levels rather than what a lens sells for in a dealer window. Where variant premiums exist they usually track finish and completeness: the black 11135 was the only version until the silver-chrome 11897 arrived in 1998, and the scarcer chrome finish plus the matching 12008 finder can carry a price above a plain black body-only example.

Sales History
Prices shown are realised prices — auction results and completed eBay sales, never asking prices. Most saleroom figures are hammer prices, before commission; some houses publish a premium-inclusive figure, and we do not adjust for condition. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher. Frequently asked questions
What is a Leica Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH worth?
No auction sales records are available for this page, so a reliable value cannot be given from the data held here. Price depends heavily on optical condition, finish and whether the 12008 bright-line finder is included.
How much does an Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH sell for at auction compared with retail?
UK auction figures are hammer prices, which sit below dealer retail because they exclude buyer's and seller's commission. Without sales records attached here, no specific hammer figure can be quoted.
What is the difference between catalogue numbers 11135 and 11897?
11135 is the black-finish Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH, which was the only version at launch in 1997, and 11897 is the silver-chrome version added in 1998.
Do I need a separate viewfinder for this lens?
Yes — Leica listed a special bright-line viewfinder under catalogue number 12008 for the Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH, and its presence affects the value of a complete outfit.
How close does the Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH focus?
Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m, and the lens stops down to f/16.
How is it different from the earlier 21mm Elmarit-M?
The ASPH version is physically smaller than the non-aspherical Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8 it replaced, and it introduced an aspherical surface into the 9-element, 7-group design.
