Leica Hektor 28mm f/6.3
The Leitz Hektor 28mm f/6.3 is a five-element wide-angle lens in three groups, made only in Leica screw mount and produced from 1935 to 1955. It was the first genuinely wide-angle optic offered for the Leica, brought out in response to the 28mm f/8 Tessar that Zeiss already supplied for the Contax. The modified Hektor layout places a cemented pair at each end of the group sequence, with the inner pair cut to a larger diameter than the outer one, and the lens focuses down to 1m (40") with a minimum aperture of f/25.
No UK auction hammer results for this lens are recorded in our sales history, so no reliable price range or median can be quoted for it today. Values in the saleroom for pre-war Leitz screw-mount glass generally track glass condition and finish, and for this model the nickel-mount HOOPY examples of 1935–37 are the scarcest presentation given that production moved to chrome only after 1937. Anyone assessing what a Hektor 28mm f/6.3 is worth should note that total output ran to 9,694 units across twenty-one years, with the bulk of that — over 6,100 lenses — made in the 1935–1939 period, so pre-war examples are far from rare while the tiny wartime and early-1950s batches are not.

Sales History
Prices shown are realised prices — auction results and completed eBay sales, never asking prices. Most saleroom figures are hammer prices, before commission; some houses publish a premium-inclusive figure, and we do not adjust for condition. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher. Auction: Leitz Auction 48 (Lot A03008) Title: Hektor 6.3/2.8cm prototype ex Leitz Museum
Description:
An exceptionally rare prototype of the Hektor 6.3/2.8cm from 1934, predating the official introduction of the production version in 1935. Pre-war Leica prototypes are of the utmost rarity, as only very small numbers were manufactured for testing and internal evaluation, and the majority did not survive. Surviving examples from this formative development period of Leitz lens design are today of great historical and collector importance. The lens is preserved in good condition, showing only moderate signs of age and handling, with clear optics and well-maintained mechanics consistent with careful preservation. The mount bears the hand-engraved optical formula designation “B236,” a characteristic feature of experimental or developmental examples from this period.Of particular significance, this example is ex Leitz Museum and is accompanied by the original museum inventory card, firmly documenting its provenance. The lens is illustrated in P.H. van Hasbroeck’s Leica in Colour, page 118, further underlining its importance and recognition in the literature.A highly significant and extremely scarce pre-war Leica prototype with distinguished provenance and published reference. Estimate: EUR 40,000 - EUR 50,000 |

Frequently asked questions
What is a Leica Hektor 28mm f/6.3 worth?
We hold no UK auction records for this lens, so no hammer figure can be given here. Condition of the cemented groups, the finish (nickel or chrome) and whether the lens is coated are the main things that move the price.
Does the Hektor 28mm f/6.3 fit an M-mount Leica?
Not directly — it was only ever made in screw mount, so an M-body requires a screw-to-M adapter.
How many were made?
Laney records 9,694 in total between 1935 and 1955, peaking at 2,114 units in 1936 and dropping to single figures in several war years.
How do I tell a coated example from an uncoated one?
Post-war lenses were coated and coating became general from late 1945; the 1941 batch numbered 580,XXX is also coated.
What is the difference between HOOPY, HOOPY-CHROM and HOOPY-B?
HOOPY is the nickel-plated mount, HOOPY-CHROM the chrome mount, and HOOPY-B the coated version. Early lenses came in nickel or chrome; after 1937 only chrome was offered.
