The Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH is a fast wide-angle rangefinder lens for the Leica M bayonet mount, introduced in 2000 and listed in Laney's Leica Collector's Guide under catalogue number 11604. Its optical layout of 9 elements in 6 groups includes a single aspherical surface in the rear group, a design that borrows from the later 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M and the 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH. At launch it was the fastest 28mm available in the M system, aimed at reportage and low-light wide-angle work where the f/2.8 Elmarit-M gave up a stop.
