What it is
The Olympus OM-1N MD is a 35mm mechanical SLR and the final revision of the OM-1, sitting within Olympus's compact OM system. The "N" denotes the updated variant with improved flash signalling and film-advance indicator, while the "MD" suffix indicates the body is factory-prepared to accept the accessory motor drive. When new it was positioned as an enthusiast manual-exposure body in the OM line.
Common faults include prism-foam deterioration causing black lines in the viewfinder, sticky or inaccurate slow shutter speeds after long storage, and non-working meters tied to the original mercury-cell requirement. Inspect the focusing screen and prism for staining, fire the shutter across all speeds, confirm the meter needle responds, and check the light seals and mirror foam. OM-system service is still offered by independent specialists in the UK and parts bodies are readily available.

Questions
What does the MD suffix mean on the OM-1N?
MD indicates the body is prepared for the Olympus motor drive, with the necessary coupling and contacts on the base plate; it does not change the camera's exposure system.
