Nikon F

The Nikon F is a 35mm single-lens reflex camera introduced in 1959 as Nikon's first SLR system. It was positioned as a professional tool built around the then-new Nikon F bayonet lens mount, with interchangeable finders and focusing screens supporting studio, reportage and scientific use.

At recent UK auction, hammer prices for the Nikon F body have spanned roughly £90–£380, with a median around £170–£180. Results are strongly condition-sensitive: tatty user bodies with worn plating and sluggish shutters sit near the bottom of that range, while clean examples with the plain prism or a working photomic finder, original leatherette and smooth film transport pull towards the upper end.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Nikon F sell for at UK auction?

Recent hammer results run from about £90 for rough bodies to around £380 for the cleanest examples, clustering near £170–£200 for average condition.

Is the Nikon F a professional camera?

Yes. It was introduced in 1959 as Nikon's first SLR and was aimed at professional users, with interchangeable finders and screens.

Does the meter in the Photomic finder still work?

Often not reliably. The selenium and CdS cells in these finders age poorly, so any metered finder should be tested against a handheld meter before you rely on it.

Are Nikon F bodies still serviceable?

Yes. The shutter and film transport are mechanical and can be overhauled by independent Nikon specialists, and F-mount lenses remain widely available.
