Chadwick (W.I.) Tailboard camera
The Chadwick (W.I.) Tailboard camera is a 19th-century British wooden plate camera of the tailboard pattern, in which the rear standard is fixed and the front standard racks forward along a hinged baseboard. Cameras of this type were sold for studio and field use during the wet-plate and dry-plate eras.
With only a single recorded UK auction result to draw on, the Chadwick (W.I.) Tailboard hammered at £288 in 2017 — a wholesale saleroom figure rather than a retail price. On that limited evidence, similar Chadwick tailboards today tend to trade in the low-to-mid hundreds when offered at auction, with condition of the bellows, woodwork and brass fittings being the main driver of what one is worth.
Sales History
Prices shown are UK auction hammer results — the wholesale level achieved in the saleroom. Neither buyer’s nor seller’s commission is included. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher.
