Konishiroku traces its origins to Konishi Honten, a photographic supply business founded in Tokyo in 1873 by Rokusaburo Sugiura, making it one of Japan's earliest camera and photographic materials companies. The firm produced cameras under the Sakura and Pearl names from the early 20th century and adopted the Konishiroku Photo Industry name in 1943. The company is best known for its later Konica-branded cameras and films, and was eventually renamed Konica in 1987 before merging with Minolta in 2003.
