Reid & Sigrist Reid III

The Reid III is a British 35mm rangefinder camera produced by Reid & Sigrist of Leicester, closely based on the Leica III design and using the 39mm screw lens mount. It was introduced in the late 1940s as a domestically built alternative to imported German rangefinders, and remained in production into the 1950s.

At recent UK auction, hammer prices for the Reid III have clustered in the £1,000–£2,000 range, with a median near £1,700 across the last three years of saleroom results. In 2025 the camera sold for between £1,450 and £1,890, so a clean working body today sells for roughly that bracket, while a rough or incomplete example has fetched as little as £325. Price is strongly condition-sensitive: matching serials, a smooth shutter and a clear rangefinder patch account for most of the variation in value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Reid III worth today?

Recent UK auction hammer results put the value of a Reid III at roughly £1,000 to £2,000, with a median near £1,700 for complete, working examples.

How much does a Reid III sell for at auction?

In 2024 and 2025, clean bodies sold for between about £1,400 and £2,000 at UK salerooms, while worn or incomplete examples have gone for as little as £325.

Why does the Reid III command a higher price than a comparable Leica III?

It is a British-made camera produced in relatively small numbers in Leicester, and collector demand for UK-manufactured Leica-pattern rangefinders supports a price premium over many equivalent German bodies.

Does the Reid III take Leica screw-mount lenses?

Yes — it uses the 39mm screw thread lens mount, so standard LTM lenses from Leica and other makers of the period can be fitted.
