Wray Wrayflex I

The Wrayflex I is a British-made 35mm SLR produced by Wray of London in the early 1950s. It was one of only a handful of 35mm single-lens reflex cameras designed and built in Britain, and used a proprietary bayonet mount for Wray's own lenses. Low production numbers have always kept surviving examples relatively scarce on the collector market.

At UK auction, hammer prices for the Wrayflex I have ranged from around £140 for tired or incomplete examples up to roughly £1,400 for outfits with extra lenses, with a median closer to £450 across recent sales. As of today in 2026 a clean body with the standard lens typically sells for £370–£630 at saleroom level, while condition and the presence of original accessories drive most of the spread in what the camera is worth. A single outlier result above £1,300 shows how much a well-specified lot with additional Wray optics can add to the price.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Wrayflex I worth today?

Recent UK auction hammer results put the value of a Wrayflex I between about £170 and £630 for a typical body-and-lens example, with exceptional multi-lens outfits occasionally selling for over £1,300.

How much does a Wrayflex I sell for at auction?

Most clean Wrayflex I bodies sell for a price in the £370–£500 bracket at UK auction, with the median across recorded sales sitting near £450 before buyer's premium.

Why does the Wrayflex I price vary so much?

Because the camera was produced in small numbers and relies on a proprietary lens mount, value is highly sensitive to shutter health, cosmetic condition and whether extra Wray lenses are included in the lot.

Is the Wrayflex I rare?

Yes. It is one of very few British-built 35mm SLRs and surviving examples appear only occasionally at UK camera auctions, which is part of why collectors are willing to pay a premium for complete outfits.
