Newman & Sinclair Slow Motion (35mm)
The Newman & Sinclair Slow Motion is a 35mm cine camera. It is a specialist British-built motion picture instrument rather than a stills camera, and surviving examples appear only occasionally on the collector market.
With just a single recorded UK auction hammer result, the Newman & Sinclair Slow Motion (35mm) sold for £1,200 in 2007, and that figure is the only firm reference point for what one is worth today in 2026. Because the sample is so small, the price a comparable example sells for now will depend heavily on completeness, mechanical condition and buyer competition on the day, and the saleroom value can move significantly either side of that historic result.
Sales History
Prices shown are UK auction hammer results — the wholesale level achieved in the saleroom. Neither buyer’s nor seller’s commission is included. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher.

Auction: Leitz Auction 12 (Lot AI_12_19938) Title: Newman & Sinclair 35mm Slow Motion
Description:
extremely rare high-speed version of the classic Newman & Sinclair 35mm Auto Kine Camera, with Ross Xpres 1.9/1 1/2 inch no.142544. The exact year of manufacture of this special version is not documented but very likely it was built around 1930. The camera differs in some significant details from the standard design: the negative carrier and the pressure plate have been completely modified to minimize friction at higher speeds, the frame speed is fixed to approx. 48fps and therefore the speed indicator on the front panel has completely been omitted, a small electric lamp is mounted above one of the sprocket wheels probably to expose stroboscopic time-stamps. The camera body is entirely made of duralumin, a lightweight metal. The camera is powered by a double spring wound motor which can run a full 200 feet (60m) load of film continuously. The camera is in beautiful working condition and comes with two internal box-shaped magazines. Because they are light, hardwearing and can be used hand-held, the Newman & Sinclair 35mm cameras have been very popular with newsreel and documentary film-makers for over three decades. Famous documentary-makers such as Robert Flaherty, Basil Wright and Humphrey Jennings used these cameras. Estimate: EUR 2,000 - EUR 2,500 |
