Leitz 50mm f/2 Summicron
The Leitz 50mm f/2 Summicron is the standard normal lens in the Leica system, produced in both screw-mount (LTM/L39) and M-bayonet forms across multiple generations from the 1950s onwards. It was designed as the everyday prime for 35mm rangefinder users, pairing a moderate f/2 aperture with the compact dimensions expected of a 50mm Leica lens. Because this listing covers the model unspecified by version, the worth of a given example depends heavily on which iteration it actually is.
At recent UK auction, unspecified 50mm f/2 Summicron examples have hammered across a very wide range, with more ordinary user copies typically selling for between roughly £180 and £600, and cleaner or more desirable versions achieving £775 to £1,225. Early, collectible or rare variants sold through specialist Leitz sales have fetched considerably more at saleroom level, with results recorded up to £20,000 for exceptional pieces; the middle of the broad user market in 2026 sits around the £500 mark. These are hammer prices and therefore wholesale — the price a buyer actually pays at retail is higher once dealer margins are added, which helps explain the gap between what a Summicron sells for at auction and what the same lens is worth on a dealer shelf.
