Leitz 50mm f/2 Summar LTM

The Leitz 50mm f/2 Summar is a standard prime lens in Leica screw mount (L39/LTM), introduced in the 1930s as Leitz's first high-speed 50mm for the rangefinder Leica. Designed as the general-purpose standard optic for pre-war screw-mount bodies, it is a collapsible six-element double-Gauss derivative often found today with soft coatings and characteristic rendering wide open.

At recent UK auction, hammer prices for the Summar LTM have mostly sat in the £125–£180 range, with a 2024 result of £180 and a 2023 sale at £125 setting the tone for typical copies in today's market. An outlier hammer of £1,100 back in 2008 reflects an exceptional example at a specialist Leitz sale rather than what a standard user-grade lens sells for now; the median of the four recorded results is around £218, skewed by that single high price. Clean, haze-free copies with smooth focus tend to command the upper end of the current saleroom range.
