Rollei 35 Prototype (PR 484)
The Rollei 35 Prototype (PR 484) is a pre-production example of the compact 35mm viewfinder camera that Rollei would later launch as the production Rollei 35. As a prototype, it sits outside the regular Rollei 35 lineage and is of interest to collectors documenting the model's development rather than to general users.
Sales data is extremely thin: a single UK auction hammer result is on record, at £15,000 in June 2015, and that wholesale figure (excluding buyer's and seller's commission) is the only reliable price reference for what a PR 484 prototype is worth today. With just one data point it is not possible to give a meaningful range or median, and the value of any individual example will depend heavily on provenance, documentation and condition. Buyers in 2026 should treat that historic result as indicative only and expect prices to be negotiated case by case rather than tracked against an active market.

Prices shown are UK auction hammer results — the wholesale level achieved in the saleroom. Neither buyer’s nor seller’s commission is included. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher.

Auction: Leitz Auction 27 (Lot AI_27_32239) Title: Rollei 35 Prototype PR 484
Description:
The only existing prototype and working sample of the new design from 1981. It represents a complete revision of the original design, while still maintaining a compact form of the original Rollei 35. The most important feature added to this camera was a rangefinder operable with the small gear at the top - the only Rollei 35 with such feature. The constructors adressed many other issues as well: the battery compartment is now accessible from the outside, the rear doors are hinged, which makes film changing easier, the retractable lens is operated with a lever and includes an automatic lens cap. The camera went never in production, exactly this camera is illustrated in Rollei Report 3 page 29 - 717 - ex Rollei Museum Estimate: EUR 12,000 - EUR 14,000 |
