Leitz 250 Reporter
The Leitz 250 Reporter, commonly known as the Leica 250, is a 35mm screw-mount rangefinder camera built around extended film magazines that hold enough stock for 250 exposures per load. Introduced in the 1930s and aimed at press and sports photographers who needed long runs without reloading, it was produced in two principal series — the earlier FF and the later GG — including a wartime GG military variant.
At UK auction the 250 Reporter is a scarce, high-value item: hammer prices (wholesale saleroom results, before commission) in the recorded history range from roughly £1,300 for tired examples up to about £140,000 for an exceptional piece, with a median around £3,600. As of today the bulk of clean standard FF and GG bodies change hands in the £3,000–£7,500 band at auction, while nickel-finish FFs, military GGs and motorised or Aeronautica variants sell for substantially more, and a camera's worth is driven heavily by originality of the 250-exposure back and matching magazines.

Auction: Leitz Auction 35 (Lot AI_35_37544) Title: Leica 250 GG Reporter
Description:
In 1936 Leitz introduced a Leica camera for 10 meters of film – the Leica 250 or the “Reporter.” As can be seen from the designation, 250 shots (full 35mm format) could be made without having to put in a new roll of film. In order to achieve that, the camera has two large film cassettes, which gives the Leica “Reporter” its unmistakable appearance. The feature of 1/1000 sec. as fastest exposure speed has been adopted for the Leica 250 as early as 1936 with the introduction of the Leica IIIa Mod. G - resulting in the so-called “GG” model. The 250 GG offered here is in beautiful original condition and in good working order. Included are two matching film spools and an uncoated Elmar 3.5/5cm no.535517. Auction: Leitz Auction 34 (Lot AI_34_37268) Title: Leica 250 GG Reporter + Leica-Motor MOOEV
Description:
In the year 1936 Leitz introduced a Leica camera for 10 meters of film – the Leica 250 or the “Reporter.” As can be seen from the designation, 250 shots (full 35mm format) could be made without having to put in a new film. In order to achieve this, the camera has two large size cassette housings, which gave the Leica “Reporter” its unmistakable appearance. The feature of 1/1000 sec. as fastest exposure speed has been adopted for the Leica 250 as early as 1936. A large portion of the resulting so-called “GG” model cameras has been delivered during World War II. Only 92 cameras have been equipped with an electric motor drive MOOEV and used for aerial reconnaissance in German warplanes - most of them permanently installed in the infamous STUKA dive bombers. Many of these cameras were lost in the air battles and only around 15 examples are known to exist today. The offered 250 GG has been delivered to Berlin (13.11.1942) and is in excellent condition, with only minimal brassing on the edges. It has got the usual modifications to use it with the Leica-Motor MOOEV, like the coupling shaft (sloping ramp type) or special film-guide rollers, maintaining the film tension during the high-speed operation. The included Leica-Motor MOOEV no.10038 also has been delivered to Berlin (19.12.1941) and is in beautiful condition, with only minimal signs of use. It is engraved on the inside with a different camera serial number 352412. It is not a surprise and actually another proof that the camera survived the turmoil of war - when in action, the cameras were usually changed when a new film was needed - the motor stayed fixed in the aeroplane. The Leica 250 GG with electric motor is an absolute rarity in the sphere of Leica collectible items. Among the most special and most valuable Leitz cameras – its rarity is comparable to the original Leica 0-Series from 1923. The chance to acquire one at all is extremely small, and in this condition, unique. Estimate: EUR 300,000 - EUR 400,000 |

Description:
One of 2 Leica 250 prototypes (nos.114051 + 114052, both illustrated in Lager Vol. I p.123). Originally based on a Leica II chassis the camera was converted (according to the Leitz repair book on October 12th, 1936) into a Leica (III) 250FF with slow speeds. These two cameras were the only Leica 250 prototypes produced in 1933 (see 'Hahne list' page 157). Pictures of this camera were used for many years in various Leica publications (C. Emmermann 'Leica Technik'). Since the conversion in 1936, the camera is still in the same never restored and fully working condition. It comes with both cassettes and a chrome Xenon 1.5/5cm no.376128. This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of the most important cameras in Leica's history. Estimate: EUR 50,000 - EUR 60,000 |

Auction: Leitz Auction 18 (Lot AI_18_11965) Title: 250 GG + Motor MOOEV
Description:
In the year 1936 Leitz offered a camera for 10 meters of film for 250 exposures – the Leica 250 or the “Reporter.” During World War II some of the Leica 250s were delivered for use in aerial combat. In order to be able to operate the film transport and make a series of shots in the extreme conditions outside a fighter plane, Leitz developed a powerful and reliable electric drive, it was Leica's first electric motor drive. In total 92 specimens of the Leica 250 with electric motor were delivered, less than 15 are known to exist. The cameras were used in STUKA dive bombers, the motors were fixed on the aircraft and the cameras were changed for new films. The Leica 250 GG with electric motor is an absolute rarity in the sphere of Leica collector’s items. Amongst the rarest and most valuable Leitz cameras, it is comparable to the original Leica 0 series of 1923. The development and history of this, the most powerful of all Leicas, is legendary. Camera no.353606 and motor no.10062 are from the same delivery batch on August 21st, 1942 to BLN Berlin (15 cameras and motor drives, delivery number 29353). Motor engraved with body no. 353619 (also from the same batch delivered to the German Air Force). Camera and motor are in fine original and fully working condition (serviced by Ottmar Michaely in 2004), with matching Summitar 2/5cm lens Estimate: EUR 120,000 - EUR 140,000 |

Auction: Leitz Auction 5 (Lot AI_5_23519) Title: 250 GG + Motordrive MOOEV
Description:
The Leica 250 GG with electric motor is an absolute rarity in the sphere of Leica collector’s items. Amongst the rarest and most valuable Leitz camera, it is comparable to the original Leica 0 series of 1923. The development and history of this, the most powerful of all Leicas, is legendary. The chance to acquire one at all is extremely small and in this condition, unique. The Leica 250 which is to be auctioned is one of a maximum of 15 cameras with motor still in existence and is in a class of its own. It is the only one in as new condition. The camera and the 24V motor have the same number. The specially made leather bag for camera and motor is also unique. The camera survived the turmoil of the war undamaged because it was not issued to Capt. Koonan of the 9th U.S. Air Force with motor number 10067 until Oct. 9, 1945 (a copy of the Leitz sales book is attached). We believe that Capt. Koonan had the bag specially made by Leitz at the time and that the camera was never used. When in action during the war the cameras were usually changed when a new film was needed, the motor being fixed in the aeroplane. Since our camera was never in action, the original pairing of motor and body was maintained. During the war they were mainly used in the infamous STUKA dive bomber of the German Luftwaffe but the 250 was originally developed for civil purposes. In the year 1936 Leitz brought out a camera for 10 meters of film – the Leica 250 or the “Reporter.” As can been seen from the designation, 250 shots (full 35mm format) could be made without having to put in a new film. In order to achieve this, the camera has two large size cassette housings which gave the Leica “Reporter” its unmistakeable appearance. Since there were only about 1000 of the “Reporter” Leicas ever made in comparison to the production models III and IIIa from the same period with production runs of over 75,000 and 90,000 respectively, it really is a rarity. During World War II some of the L Estimate: EUR 1,944 - EUR 353,652 |

Frequently asked questions
What is a Leitz 250 Reporter worth today?
Recent UK auction hammer prices for the 250 Reporter span about £1,300 to £15,000 for typical FF and GG examples, with a median near £3,600; exceptional rarities have reached into six figures.
How much does a Leica 250 GG sell for at auction?
Standard GG bodies have sold for roughly £3,000–£7,500 in recent UK sales, while military GG, Aeronautica and motor-fitted variants command significant premiums over that price band.
Why does the 250 Reporter's value vary so much?
Value hinges on variant (FF, GG, nickel, military, Aeronautica, motorised), completeness of the 250-exposure magazines, originality of finish and matching serial numbers — a single outlier in the sales history reached about £140,000, reflecting how much rarity and provenance shift the price.
Is a Leitz 250 Reporter a usable camera or a collector's piece?
In practice it is almost exclusively a collector's camera: the 250-exposure cassettes are scarce and the mechanism is fragile, so most examples are bought for display and preservation rather than regular shooting.
