Leitz M4-2

The Leitz M4-2 is a 35mm rangefinder camera using the Leica M bayonet mount, introduced in 1977 and produced at Leitz Canada in Midland, Ontario until 1980. It was a simplified, cost-reduced successor to the M4: the self-timer was omitted, while a hot shoe and motor-drive coupling were added, signalling the resumption of M-series production after the M5.

At recent UK auction, standard chrome and black M4-2 bodies have typically sold in a £550–£3,300 band with a median hammer price around £1,300, and clean 2024–2025 results have tended to sit at the lower end near £550–£750. Special variants are a different market: a Gold commemorative example fetched £24,000 at auction in November 2024, so today a headline figure can reflect variant rather than condition. All prices quoted here are UK saleroom hammer results and therefore wholesale — what the M4-2 sells for before buyer's or seller's commission, not a retail asking price.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Leitz M4-2 worth today?

A standard chrome or black M4-2 is worth roughly £550 to £3,300 at UK auction in 2026, with a median hammer price near £1,300; condition, completeness and originality drive where a specific body lands in that range.

How much does a Leica M4-2 sell for at auction?

Recent UK hammer prices for ordinary bodies have been £550–£750, while exceptional or boxed examples have reached the low thousands, and rare factory variants such as the Gold have sold for far more — £24,000 in November 2024.

Why does the M4-2 price vary so much?

The value depends heavily on variant and condition: a well-used chrome body sits near the bottom of the range, while Gold, Olive, Panda and Safari-prototype M4-2 examples are collector items whose price is set by rarity rather than by the camera's everyday shooting use.

Is the M4-2 the same as the M4?

No — the M4-2 was built in Canada from 1977, dropped the M4's self-timer and added a hot shoe and motor-drive coupling, so although the two share the M bayonet mount and overall layout they are distinct models with different market values.
