Leitz II (D)
The Leitz II, also known as the Model D, is a 35mm rangefinder camera introduced by Ernst Leitz Wetzlar in 1932. It was the first Leica to incorporate a coupled rangefinder alongside the separate viewfinder window, and it uses the 39mm screw thread lens mount shared across the early Leica range. When new it sat at the mid-point of the Leitz line-up, below the later III series but above the non-rangefinder Standard and I models.
At recent UK auction, standard chrome examples of the Leitz II (D) typically sell for between £170 and £950 at hammer, with a median close to £480 across the sales on file — these are wholesale saleroom results before buyer's and seller's commission rather than retail asking prices. As of 2026, clean cosmetic condition and a working rangefinder remain the main drivers of value, while rarer variants such as Luxus, military-issue or early upgraded I(A) bodies can fetch several thousand pounds, with one Luxus-style example reaching £7,000 in a specialist Leitz sale. Dummy display bodies and plainer black repaints are worth less and tend to sit at the lower end of the range.
