Leitz S1 Alpha
The Leitz S1 Alpha is a high-resolution digital scanning camera introduced by Leica in the latter half of the 1990s. It was aimed at studio, museum and reproduction work rather than handheld photography, and was sold at a professional-tier price point when new.
Public UK auction data for the S1 Alpha is extremely thin: the only hammer result on file in our records is a single sale at £1,200 in late 2020. Because that figure represents one wholesale saleroom transaction rather than a retail asking price, today's value for a working example is effectively negotiated case-by-case, and condition, completeness of the scanning back and accompanying software all materially affect what a clean unit sells for.
Sales History
Prices shown are UK auction hammer results — the wholesale level achieved in the saleroom. Neither buyer’s nor seller’s commission is included. Dealer and retail asking prices are typically higher.

Auction: Leitz Auction 37 (Lot AI_37_38638) Title: Leica S1 Alpha 10602
Description:
The S1 was the first digital camera made by Leica. It was offered in three versions: Pro, Alpha and High Speed - all were scanner cameras with CCD chip. The output from the Alpha model was optimised for A4 prints in 300dpi quality. Because of a prohibitive price of approx. 17000 EUR and limited use only about 160 S1 cameras were sold. The offered camera is in almost mint condition, with Leica R and Canon FD adapters, two cables, power supply, matching maker's box (worn). Estimate: EUR 2,400 - EUR 2,600 |
