Leitz IIIg
The Leitz IIIg is a 35mm rangefinder camera and the last of the screw-mount (Leica Thread Mount) Barnack-style Leicas, introduced in 1957. When new it sat at the top of the screw-mount line, offering bright-line framing for 50mm and 90mm lenses alongside the traditional top-plate dials.
At recent UK auction, hammer prices for the IIIg have clustered in a £380–£780 range, with a median around £420 for typical clean examples sold in 2024–2025. Today the IIIg sells for noticeably less than it did a decade ago, when saleroom results of £1,200–£1,300 were not unusual; condition, matching body/top-plate engravings and the presence of a working self-timer are the main factors that push value to the upper end of that range.

In approx.1952 and parallel to the M3 test series, Leitz was already working on an improved screw-mount camera with a large brightline finder incorporated into the rangefinder-system. These test cameras, which look very similar to the IIIg from the outside, are completely different models. There were only four of these cameras produced, serial numbers 650000 to 650003. The camera here has an internal frame-counter and also a different topplate and viewfinder to the production model. Published by Lager and van Hasbroeck.
