Leitz M5
The Leitz M5 is a 35mm rangefinder camera introduced in 1971, notable as the first M-series body with built-in through-the-lens metering via a swing-arm CdS cell. It was positioned at the top of the Leitz rangefinder line when new, but its larger, heavier body was divisive among M-series users and production ended in 1975.
At recent UK auction in 2024, hammer prices for the M5 have ranged from about £650 to £1,800, with a median near £1,000 across sales from 2020 onward. Condition and completeness drive the spread today: clean working bodies with accurate meters sit toward the upper end, while examples needing service sell well below £900. Two-lug early bodies are scarcer than the later three-lug version and can attract a premium when they appear in the saleroom.
