Leitz R4

The Leitz R4 is a 35mm single-lens reflex camera introduced in 1980, using the Leica R bayonet mount. It positioned Leitz's reflex line as a multi-mode electronic SLR, offering aperture-priority, shutter-priority, programmed and manual exposure modes alongside selective and integrated metering.

At UK auction today the R4 body is an accessible Leica R entry point: hammer prices over the past two years have ranged from about £56 to £260, with a median of roughly £100–£110 for working examples. Because these are saleroom hammer results rather than dealer retail, what a clean R4 is worth at auction sits well below shop pricing, and condition together with the presence of a working lens drives most of the variation in what each example sells for.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Leitz R4 worth in the UK today?

Recent UK auction hammer prices for R4 bodies have mostly fallen between about £56 and £260, with a median around £100–£110, so a clean working example is typically worth roughly £100 at saleroom level.

How much does a Leica R4 sell for at auction?

Over the last two years the R4 has sold for as little as £56 for a body in unknown condition and as much as £262 for a tidier example, with most lots changing hands close to £100.

Why do R4 prices vary so much?

The R4's value is highly condition-sensitive because the early electronic exposure system is prone to failure; bodies with confirmed working meters and shutters fetch noticeably more than untested or faulty ones.

Is the Leitz R4 a good way into the Leica R system?

Yes — at current auction price levels the R4 is one of the cheapest routes into a Leica R-mount body, though buyers should budget for a possible service and remember that R-mount lenses cost considerably more than the body itself.
